I have seen Vocal Point perform, but never at a concert dedicated just to this fabulous a capella group from BYU. Today’s matinee was sold out, every seat in the De Jong concert hall was filled with VP’s fans. Vocal Point 2018 is: Beat Boxer Matt Newman, Bass Carl Prince, Tenor James Thorup, Tenor Jantzen Dalley, Tenor Jason Bromley, Tenor Logan Shelton, Baritone Joshua Harden, Baritone Nathan Cazmersen, and Baritone David Steele. These men can bring it and the crowd loved every song.
The show was longer than I thought it would be, and it’s because the nine-man group don’t just sing. They talk to us, the audience, and we get to know them as individuals. Some talk about their childhood, their upbringing, and always about family. They had a “Dad Joke Battle” that went on a tad too long but was really funny. Four members of the group got on two sides and tried to tell “Dad Jokes” and make the other team break into laughter. What I loved about this bit was it was obvious that this group loves to have fun and are easy laughers. I love easy laughers.
Each set of songs was fantastic. All songs were choreographed, even if the singers were sitting on stools. One of my favorite pieces was beat boxer Newman did a whole “song” of the sounds he can make. I was blown away. As a singer, I know the kind of work it takes to be a competent singer, but the sounds I make are run of the mill compared to what this talented performer can do. How did he even learn how to do this? Amazing! Another big crowd favorite was a set of oldies and I could see young and old alike really smiling and clapping to this one.
Vocal Point is a talented group of men that sing upbeat, clean songs in beautiful settings. I would highly recommend this group for a wonderful, affordable concert that you will enjoy very much!
